2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion of large amounts of methanol results in incoordination, weakness, acidosis, convulsions and respiratory failure. Kidney damage and blindness may result. Ingestion of sodium methylate may result in severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Acute renal failure and hematuria have also been reported. Toxic if swallowed.

Eye

Corrosive. Eye contact may result in burns and permanent injury.

Skin

Corrosive. Skin contact may result in burns and permanent injury.

Inhaled

Inhalation of the vapours may cause narcosis, dizziness, headache and nausea. May also cause respiratory irritation and dyspnea.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic overexposure to methanol vapours may cause conjunctivitis, headache, insomnia, gastric disturbances and permanent or temporary loss of sight. Methanol is potentially toxic by acute or chronic intake. Skin absorption liekly. Narcotic effects, sight problems, nerve and liver damage are possible.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Immediately rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water. DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek medicla attention.

Eye

Immediately wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Immediately wash thoroughly with plenty of water. Apply sterile dressing and seek medical attention.

Inhaled

Keep patient calm and remove to fresh air. Seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower is readily available. Immediately remove contaminated clothing. If danger of loss of consciousness, place patient in recovery position and seek medical attention immediately. Apply artificial respiration if necessary. First-aiders should pay attention to their own safety.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat according to symptoms. If product is swallowed administer 50ml of pure ethanol in a drinkable concentration.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 1500 ,g/kg (rat) Primary skin irritation/rabbit/BASF test: Corrosive. As the product corrodes the skin, it can br expected to have a similar effect on the eyes also Acute inhalation hazard (rat; test results depending on toxicity and volatility) : no mortalities after 8hr exposure in a highly enriched and/or saturated atmosphere at ambient temperatures. Other information - rats gavaged with methanol on day 10 of gestation showed dose-related increases in total anormalites of the testes and eye. Maternal toxicity was not observed at any dose level. Methanol was administered by inhalation to pregnant rats on days 1-19 of gestation for 7hrs per day. Dose levels were 20000 ppm, 10000 ppm, 5000 ppm and 0 ppm. Methanol was teratogenic at the high doses of 10000 ppm and 20000 ppm.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

Methanol TWA = 200 ppm (262 mg/m3) STEL = 250 ppm (328 mg/m3) Skin absorption.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure workplace is well ventilated.

3.3 Personal Protection

Eye protection - wear protective goggles Skin protection - wear protective gloves and overalls. Respiratory protection - use a vapour respirator if ventilation is inadequate or vapour exposure is likely. Hands and face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the shift. The usual precautions for the handling of chemicals msut be observed. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Avoid inhalation of vapour.

3.4 Flammability

Flammable liquid.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in accordance with all regulations relevant to Class 3 substances. Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well ventilated place. Protect from acids and acid forming substances. Protect against moisture. Prevent electrostatic charge. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear. Fire extinguishers should be kept handy. Minimum shelf life in sealed containers is two years if properly stored. Protect against heat.

Hazard TOXIC CORROSIVE

Risk Phrases

R10 Flammable.

R23/25 Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed.

R35 Causes severe burns.

Safety Phrases

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

S28:SOMETH After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water.

S36/37 Wear suitable protective clothing and gloves.

S39 Wear eye/face protection.

S45 In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label whenever possible).

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear. Ensure adequate ventilation in spill area. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhalation of vapour. Do not allow product to enter drains or water courses.

Contain and soak up large spills with dry non-combustible absorbent material. Small spills can be flushed away with copious amounts of water for effluent treatment only. Dispose of wastewater correctly. Place waste in labelled containers for disposal.

Disposal

Waste must be incinerated in accordance with local regulations. Contaminated packs should be emptied as far as possible and then passed on for reprocessing or recycling after being thoroughly cleaned with water.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Flammable liquid. Keep away from ignition sources. Product decomposes to caustic soda and methanol. May cause exothermic reaction with water and acids.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use carbon dioxide, foam or dry chemical. Water may be used, but only if quantity exceeds ten times the volume of product involved. Collect separately contaminated extinguishing water; do not allow to reach sewerage or effluent systems.

5 OTHER INFORMATION

Other Information

Ecotoxic effects for methanol : Toxicity to fish Leuciscus idus = 10000 mg/l/48h The product is an alkali. Before discharging sewage into effluent treatment plants, neutralisation is generally required. Inhibition of degradation activity in activated sludge is not be anticipated during correct introduction of low concentrations. Do not discharge product to water courses without effluent treatment. The product is unstable in water. Based on OECD criteria the products of hydrolysis (caustic soda, methanol) are readily biodegradable.
