2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Swallowing can result in diarrhoea, abdominal pain, ulceration of the stomach, lachrymation, difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness, coma & possible death.

Eye

A severe eye irritant. Contamination of the eyes can result in permanent injury. Corrosive to eyes; contact can cause corneal burns.

Skin

Contact with the skin will result in mild irritation. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to allergic contact dermatitis.

Inhaled

Inhalation of the dust will result in respiratory irritation. Decomposes when wet to evolve chlorine gas. Inhalation of chlorine will result in severe respiratory irritation. Delayed effects can include shortness of breath, severe headache, pulmonary oedema and pneumonia.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

No Data available.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Immediately rinse mouth with water. Give water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs give further water. Seek immediate medical assistance.

Eye

Immediately irrigate with copious quantities of water for at least 15 minutes. Eyelids to be held open. Remove clothing if contaminated and wash skin. Urgently seek medical assistance. Transport to hospital or medical centre.

Skin

Wash contaminated skin with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. If swelling, redness, blistering or irritation occurs, seek medical advice.

Inhaled

Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully recovered. If breathing laboured and patient cyanotic (blue), ensure airways are clear and have qualified person give oxygen through a face mask. If breathing has stopped apply artificial respiration at once. In event of cardiac arrest, apply external cardiac massage. Seek medical advice.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically. Delayed effects from exposure to chlorine (decomposition product) can include shortness of breath, severe headache, pulmonary oedema and pneumonia.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 (Rat) : 1400 mg/kg; Oral Lowest Lethal Dose (Human) : 3570 mg/kg.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

No value assigned for this specific material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (Worksafe ). However, Exposure Standards for decomposition product : Chlorine, TWA : 3 mg/m3 (Peak limitation)

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposure levels below standards.

3.3 Personal Protection

Avoid skin and eye contact and inhalation of dust. Wear overalls, chemical goggles and impervious gloves. Avoid generating and inhaling dusts. If dust exists, wear a dust respirator meeting the requirements of AS 1715 and AS 1716. Always wash hands before smoking, eating, drinking or using the toilet. Wash contaminated clothing and other protective equipment before storing or re-using.

3.4 Flammability

Non combustible, but will support the combustion of other material.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Not defined as a Dangerous Good by the n Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail. This material is a Scheduled Poison (S5) and must be stored, maintained and used in accordance with the relevant regulations. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Store in a well ventilated area. Store away from combustible materials, any easily oxidisable matter, strong acids and alkali, oxidising agents (organic peroxides) and foodstuffs. Store away from sources of heat or ignition. Keep dry - reacts with water; may lead to drum rupture. Keep containers closed at all times - check regularly for spills (DO NOT return spilled material to original container).

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

Hazard HARMFUL

Risk Phrases

R22 Harmful if swallowed.

R31 Contact with acids liberates toxic gas.

R36/37 Irritating to eyes and respiratory system.

Safety Phrases

S2 Keep out of the reach of children.

S8 Keep container dry.

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

S41 In case of fire and/or explosion, do not breathe fumes.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Immediate action is necessary. Increase ventilation. Clear area of all unprotected personnel. Wear fully protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contamination and inhalation of vapours; air-supplied mask is recommended for large spills to avoid inhalation of toxic chlorine gas which is liberated when material is exposed to water. Avoid contact with other material. DO NOT return spilled product to original container. Do NOT add small amounts of water to the product.

To neutralise add sodium sulphite (2.4 kg/kg product). If no active chlorine remains, add soda ash (1.1 kg/kg product) to effect complete neutralisation. Where a spill has occurred in a confined space or inadequately ventilated enclosure and the material is damp and evolving chlorine, the rate of chlorine evolution can be reduced by covering the thinly spread solid with soda ash.

Disposal

Dispose of material in accordance with all Local, State and Federal Laws.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Oxidising agent. Not combustible, but will support combustion of other materials. Decomposes upon heating liberating chlorine and oxygen. Heating can cause expansion or decomposition leading to violent rupture of containers. If safe to do so, remove containers from path of fire.

Extinguishing Media

Water spray or fog (large quantities necessary).
