4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothing and breathing apparatus/ dust mask in dusty conditions.

Vacuum or sweep up spilled material and place into suitable containers and hold for reuse or disposal. Ventilate area and wash spill site after material pick-up is complete.

Disposal

Contact a licensed professional waste disposal service to dispose of this material. Dissolve or mix the material with a combustible solvent and burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber. Observe all federal, state and local environmental regulations.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Combustible material but will not burn on its own. Avoid contact with incompatible materials such a strong oxidising agents. Product may decompose emitting toxic fumes such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sodium/sodium oxides. Hazardous polymerisation has not been reported.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus. For small fires use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or chemical foam. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding conditions.

5 OTHER INFORMATION

Other Information

This chemical is readily biodegradable and is not likely to bioconcentrate. Acute aquatic effects (for anhydrous sodium acetate) 96-hr LC50 are as follows : Fathead minnow : > 100 mg/L 96-hr Water flea : > 1000 mg/L 96-hr This chemical has a high biological oxygen demand, and it is expected to cause significant oxygen depletion in aquatic systems. It has a low potential to affect aquatic organisms.
