2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
Moderately toxic by ingestion. Eye
Irritating to eyes. Skin
Harmful in contact with skin. Risk of skin absorption which can cause death in high doses. Prolonged skin contact can cause dryness. Inhaled
The vapour is likely to cause irritation to the respiratory system. Harmful by inhalation. 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
Disorders of the liver and digestive tract, eg. loss of appetite, vomiting and colic, have been observed in cases of chronic exposure to DMF. Studies indicate experimental teratogenic and reproductive effects. Human mutagenic data. Chronic skin absorption may cause damage to the liver. Limited evidence to suggest a suspected carcinogen.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
If swallowed, immediately rinse out mouth and then drink plenty of water. Seek medical attention.
Eye
If eye contact occurs, rinse thoroughly under running water for at least 15 minutes with eyelids held open. Seek medical attention.
Skin
If skin contact occurs, wash thoroughly under running water. Remove contaminated clothing and launder thoroughly before reuse.
Inhaled
If vapours are inhaled, remove affected person to fresh air and seek medical attention. In cases where there is loss of consciousness, place affected person in the coma or lateral recovery position and seek medical attention immediately. Apply artificial respiration if necessary.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.
2.6 Toxicity Data
Oral LD50 = 2200 mg/kg (Rat) ; 3700 mg/kg (Mouse) Dermal LD50 = approx 1500 mg/kg (Rabbit) ; >5000 mg/kg (Mouse) Inhalation LC50 = 9400 mg/m3/2hr (Mouse)
3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
The following exposure standards have been established by Worksafe : Dimethylformamide : TWA = 10 ppm (30 mg/m3) - Skin Absorption through the skin may be a significant source of exposure.
3.2 Engineering Controls
Ensure workplace is well ventilated to maintain air concentrations below the exposure standard, including the use of local exhaust ventilation.
3.3 Personal Protection
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of vapour. The following personal protective equipment is recommended : Protective goggles (tight fitting), protective gloves (butyl rubber), and other protective clothing. Equipment used should comply with relevant n Standards. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities. Pregnant women should avoid skin contact or inhalation of this product.
3.4 Flammability
Flammable. Keep away from all sources of ignition and heat. Earth all containers to reduce the possibility of sparks from static electricity. Flammable when exposed to heat or flame; can react with oxidising agents. Explosion hazard when exposed to flame. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Store in accordance with all Commonwealth, State or Territory regulations relevant to Class 3 liquids. Transport in accordance with the n Dangerous Goods Code. Keep containers tightly sealed. Keep away from all sources of ignition. Take precautions against static discharges. Ensure all storage areas are well ventilated. Protect from heat. Store in a cool dry area.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. 2265 Class 3 Sub Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code 2P Pack Group III EPG No. 3A3 Shipping Name N,N-DIMETHYLFORMAMIDE Hazard TOXIC
Risk Phrases R61 May cause harm to the unborn child. R20/21 Harmful by inhalation and in contact with skin. R36 Irritating to eyes.
Safety Phrases S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and contact a doctor or . S28:DIFORM After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. S36 Wear suitable protective clothing. S53 Avoid exposure - obtain special instructions before use. S45 In case of accident or if you feel unwell, contact a doctor or immediately (show the label where possible).
4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Clean up personnel should wear protective clothing including breathing apparatus Ensure adequate ventilation around spill area. Sources of ignition should be kept clear.
Disposal
Observe all Local, State and Federal regulations before disposing of material at an approved incinerator.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Flammable liquid. Take protective measures against static discharges. Cool heat exposed drums, tanks or containers with copious amounts of water. The vapours are heavier than air and may travel to a source of ignition and flash back. When heated to decomposition the product emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides. Dangerous reactions will occur if DMF is mixed with nitrates or strong oxidising agents. Dangerous reactions also occur if mixed with halogenated hydrocarbons, in the presence of certain metals, particularly at elevated temperatures.
Extinguishing Media
In case of fire use water spray/fog, carbon dioxide, foam or dry chemical. Foam should be used in large quantities as it partially decomposes in a fire. Fire fighters should wear full protective suit and self contained breathing apparatus. Contain and dispose of fire debris and contaminated extinguishants in accordance with State and Local Government regulations. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
Other Information
This chemical substance should not effect the degredation activity of the activated sludge in effluent treatment plants if discharged correctly in low concentrations. The product is readily biodegradable. The product does not contain organically bound halogens. Degradability : >90% DOC reduction (OECD 301 E) Toxicity to fish : LC50 > 500 mg/l/48hr (Golden Orfe) : LC50 7100 mg/l/96hr (Sunfish) Water pollution class : slightly hazardous to aquatic organisms.
