2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Harmful if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Can cause nervous system damage. May cause severe headache.

Eye

Causes eye irritation.

Skin

May cause skin irritation. May cause skin sensitisation, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material. May cause skin discolouration. May cause photosensitisation in certain individuals.

Inhaled

Inhalation of high concentrations may cause central nervous system effects characterised by headache, dizziness, unconsciousness and coma. Causes respiratory tract irritation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. May cause photo- sensitisation in certain individuals.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention immediately. Induce vomiting (Ipecac Syrup or stimulate throat with finger)

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Seek medical attention. Immediately flush affected areas with plenty of soap and running water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

Inhaled

Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately; avoid becoming casualty. Seek medical attention immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 65 mg/kg (Rat) ; 400 mg/kg (Mouse) Dermal LD50 = not available Inhalation LC50 = 175 ppm/6hr (Rat) Not listed as a carcinogen by ACGIH, IARC, NIOSH, NTP or OSHA.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

Worksafe recommends the following exposure standards : 2-Furaldehyde : TWA 2ppm (7.9 mg/m3) Skin absorption notice - absorption through the skin may be a significant source of exposure.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissable exposure limits.

3.3 Personal Protection

Wear appropriate protective ege glasses or chemical safety goggles, gloves and protective clothing to minimise skin exposure. Wear breathing apparatus to maintain exposure levels below the permissable standard. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Material is flammable. Flash point : 60 deg C Autoignition temperature : 315 deg C

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a tightly closed container away from light and air. Store in a cool, dry well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. 1199

Class 6.1

Sub Risk 3

Hazchem Code 2W

Pack Group II

EPG No. 6C3

Shipping Name FURALDEHYDES

Hazard TOXIC

Risk Phrases

R23/25 Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed.

Safety Phrases

S24/25 Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

S44 If you feel unwell, contact a doctor or immediately (show the label where possible).

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Extinguish all sources of ignition (NO SMOKING).

Absorb spill with inert material (eg. dry sand or earth), then collect in sealable container and hold for waste disposal. DO NOT wash untreated material down the drain or sewer.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility by incineration.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Autoignition temperature = 315 deg C. Flash point = 60 deg C. Material is chemically stable. Avoid incompatible materials, light, ignition sources, excess heat. Incompatible with strong oxidisers, strong acids, bases. Product become reddish-brown on exposure to light and air. Hazardous decomposition products include carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Hazardous polymerisation has not been reported.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. In case of fire use water, dry chemical, chemical foam or alcohol-resistant foam type extinguishers. This material is lighter than water and insoluble in water. The fire can easily be spread by the use of water in an area where the water cannot be contained.
