2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion of 10g of product by a young male adult induced nausea and vertigo.

Eye

Causes irritation to the eyes. Contact with the liquid can be painful, may cause tearing.

Skin

The mild oily liquid is slightly irritative to the skin.

Inhaled

The low vapour pressure eliminates the possibility of injury via inhalation. Inhaled hot vapour can be irritative to the respiratory tract.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Has been reported that it may damage the developing foetus (USA).

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Seek medical attention.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention.

Inhaled

Remove immediately to fresh air. Support breathing if necessary. Seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

No specific antidote. Treatment should be based on individual reactions of patient and symptoms experienced.

Dermal LD50 = >20,000 mg/kg (Rabbit)

Dermal LDLo = 6000 mg/kg (Rat)

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

TWA = 5 mg/m3 (Worksafe)

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposure levels below standard.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory - avoid breathing vapour. Use an approved goggle and full-face respiratory protection equipment when vapours are heated. Skin - avoid skin or clothing contact. Wear chemical-resistant clothing and gloves. Eyes - wear a full-face shield.

3.4 Flammability

Material is combustible.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight and heat. Use proper grounding procedures to avoid electric/static discharges. Keep working space well ventilated.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Wear full protective clothing. Evacuate personnel not involved in clean up. Eliminate sources of ignition (NO SMOKING).

Disposal

Burn disposal material in an approved incinerator. Addition of a more flammable solvent such as alcohol can help combustion efficiency. Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations to protect the environment.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

This material has a slight fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame, can react with strong oxidising agents. This material reacts explosively with chlorine. Hazardous decomposition products include oxides of carbon. It is incompatible with strong oxidisers, strong acids and nitrates. Keep away from heat. Strong acidic or alkaline materials can hydrolyse the ester into acid and the equivalent alcohol. Hazardous polymerisation will not occur.

Extinguishing Media

Wear full protective clothing including breathing apparatus. Use carbon dioxide, dry chemical or foam type extinguishers.
