3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
No exposure limit has been established for this product by Worksafe , however the following exists for nuisance dust : TWA 10 mg/m3.
3.2 Engineering Controls
Good industrial hygeine practice dictates that the work area should be contained and provided with adequate local exhaust or mechanically-induced general ventilation to prevent irritation of the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
3.3 Personal Protection
Respiratory protection - wear an approved respirator for dusts and mists. Eye protection - wear chemical splash goggles. Skin protection - wear rubber, PVC or plastic gloves to minimise skin contact. Other clothing and equipment - wear hard hats, chemical-resistant or rubber shoes and protective clothing should be worn when handling Potassium carbonate.
3.4 Flammability
Material is not combustible and will not burn. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Since the product is very hygroscopic, the best possible storage conditions should be provided. Damp floors, leaking and moist storage conditions must be avoided. Moisture absorption will cause lumping of the product and reduction in alkalinity. Use on 'first in - first out' basis.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. N/A Class None Allocated Sub Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code N/A Pack Group 0 EPG No. N/A Shipping Name POTASSIUM CARBONATE Hazard HARMFUL
Risk Phrases R22 Harmful if swallowed. R36 Irritating to eyes.
Safety Phrases S22 Do not breathe dust. S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing equipment if dusty conditions prevail.
Stop leaks. Contain spill. Remove as much as possible (e.g shovel up or remove by vacuum truck, if liquid), place in clsoed, labelled containers and' store in a safe place to await proper disposal. Wash spill area with large amounts of water to remove final traces. Persons performing this work should wear adequate personal protective equipment and clothing.
Disposal
Reuse spilled material, if possible, otherwise dispose in accordance with all federal, state and local health and pollution regulations. Dispose via a licensed chemical waste hauler.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Material will not burn or explode. Avoid simultaneous presence of Potassium Carbonate and Lime dust (CaO). The combination of these two chemicals in the presence of water or perspiration will cause the formation of irritating caustic potash (potassium hydroxide). Hazardous decomposition products are not expected. Hazardous polymerisation is not expected.
Extinguishing Media
Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use water fog, dry chemical, foam or carbon dioxide in areas where this product is stored. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding conditions. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
