2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Red phosphorus is not readily absorbed and, in pure form, is considered non- poisonous. However, possible contamination with the yellow form must be considered, and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or garlic odour on breath will indicate poisoning by the latter.

Eye

Red phosphorus causes eye irritation. If contaminated with yellow phosphorus, eye contact can cause severe irritation and burns.

Skin

Red phosphorus is not harmful to skin. If contaminated with white phosphorus, howevere, contact may cause deep, slow healing burns.

Inhaled

Not considered highly toxic but acute exposure may cause coughing, bronchitis, possible liver or kidney impairment if contaminated with yellow phosphorus.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic ingestion or inhalation may induce systemic phosphorus poisoning. Liver damage, kidney damage, jaw/tooth abnormalities, blood disorders and cardiovascular effects can result. Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems, jaw/tooth abnormalities or impaired liver, kidney or respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately.

Eye

Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical aid immediately.

Skin

Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water.

Inhaled

Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower is readily available.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically and supportively.

2.6 Toxicity Data

No information available.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

None established.

3.2 Engineering Controls

A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of itinto the general work area.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory protection - fof conditions where the exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator (NIOSH type N95 or better filters) may be worn. If oil particles (e.g lubricants , cutting fluids, glycerine, etc) are present, use a NIOSH type R or P filter. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING : Air-purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmopsheres. Skin protection - wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing. Eye protection - use chemcial safety goggles. Other protection - presence of yellow phosphorus as an impurity will change necessary protective equipment.

3.4 Flammability

Flammable solid. May ignite from friction or rough handling.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep in tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry ventilated area. Protect against physical damage. Isolate from incompatible materials such as halogens, halides, sulphur, oxidising materials and alkalis (forms phosphine). Protect from light. Avoid dust formation and control ignition sources. Employ grounding, venting and explosion relief provisions in accord with accepted engineering practices in any process capable of generating dust and/or static electricity. Empty only into inert or non-flammable atmosphere. Emptying contents into an non-inert atmosphere where flammable vapours may be present could cause flash fire or explosion due to electrostatic discharge. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (dust, solids); observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. 1338

Class 4.1

Sub Risk None Allocated

Hazchem Code 2WE

Pack Group III

EPG No. 20

Shipping Name PHOSPHORUS, AMORPHOUS

Hazard

Risk Phrases

R11 Highly flammable.

R16 Explosive when mixed with oxidising substances.

Safety Phrases

S7 Keep container tightly closed.

S43:PHOSPR In case of fire, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or regular foam type extinguishers.

S2 Keep out of the reach of children.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Remove all source of ignition - NO SMOKING. Wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Ventilate area of leak or spill. Use non sparking tools and equipment.

Clean up spills in a manner that does not disperse dust into the air. Reduce airborne dust and prevent scattering by moistening with water. Pick up spill for recovery or disposal and place in a closed container.

Disposal

Whatever cannot be saved for recovery or recycling should be handled as hazardous waste and sent to a RCRA approved waste facility. Processing, use or contamination of this product may change the waste management options. State and local disposal regulations. Dispose of container and unused contents in accordance with federal, state and local requirements.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Flammable solid. May ignite form friction or rough handling. May form explosive mixtures with oxidising materials. Sensitive to static discharge. Product may decompose emitting white phosphorus, oxides of phosphorous, phosphine and phosphoric acid (if water is present) may be released if this material is heated to decomposition. Avoid contact with halogens, halides, sulphur, oxidising materials and alkalis (forms phosphine), heat, flames, ignition sources, shock and friction.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or regular foam type extinguishers. Use water flooding followed by covering with wet sand, clay, ground limestone until clean-up. Burning phosphorus produces irritating but not highly toxic oxides. Flame-retardant full protective clothing and full breathing apparatus should be worn with phosphorus fires. The red form can convert to the more readily flammable yellow form at high temperatures.
