2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
The toxicological properties of this material have not been fully investigated. Eye
Dust may irritate the eyes. Skin
The human body absorbs nitrate through the skin. As with all chemicals in general, larger quantities may cause poisoning. Inhaled
Exposure to dust is slightly irritative to the respiratory tract (including mucous membranes, throat and lungs). 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
The toxicological properties of this material have not been fully investigated.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water to drink. Seek medical aid immediately. DO NOT induce vomiting. Allow the victim to rinse their mouth and then drink 2-4 cupfuls of water.
Eye
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention.
Skin
Flush affected areas with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. If effects persist seek medical attention.
Inhaled
Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical atention.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Large amounts of nitrates taken by mouth may have serious or even fatal effects. Small, repeated doses may lead to weakness, general depression, headache and mental impairment.
2.6 Toxicity Data
Oral LD50 = 3900 mg/kg (Rat) Not listed as a carcinogen by ACGIH, IARC, NIOSH, NTP or OSHA.
3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
An exposure standard has not been established for this product by Worksafe . Safe at all levels.
3.2 Engineering Controls
Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentration to a minimum. Use process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to control airborne levels.
3.3 Personal Protection
Eye protection - not required. Skin protection - wear protective gloves. Respiratory protection - not required. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.
3.4 Flammability
Keep away from heat and ignition sources - NO SMOKING. Ventilation is required to prevent a dust explosion. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Transport or store in a cool, dry shaded place away from incompatible materials such as organic solvents, carbon, sulphur and other reducing compounds. Store in a well ventilated area.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. 1454 Class 5.1 Sub Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code 1[Z] Pack Group III EPG No. 31 Shipping Name CALCIUM NITRATE Hazard IRRITANT
Risk Phrases R8 Contact with combustible material may cause fire. R36 Irritating to eyes.
Safety Phrases S17 Keep away from combustible material.
4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing apparatus in dusty conditions. Avoid raising dust. Eliminate all flammables and sources of ignition. Prevent material from entering drains, sewers and water courses.
Sweep up or shovel into suitable containers and hold for recycle/reuse or disposal. Wash spill site with soapy water after initial pickup is complete.
Disposal
Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Material assists combustion. May cause combustible materials to burn/explode. May become explosive upon heating. Stable under normal conditions. Avoid contact with strong oxidants, strong reducing agents, strong acids, carbon, sulphur and organic solvents. Product may decompose above 500 deg C emitting hazardous decomposition products such as nitrogen oxides, irritating and toxic fumes and gases of nitrogen. Hazardous polymerisation has not been reported.
Extinguishing Media
Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use water fog/spray, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, alcohol or polymer type foam to extinguish fire. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
