2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute Swallowed
Swallowing the dust may result in fluoride poisoning. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, stupor and weakness. More severe exposures result in muscular weakness, tremors, convulsions, collapse, dyspnea, cardiac failure and death. Eye
Dusts are corrosive and will burn the eyes. Prolonged contact may damage the eyes. Skin
Dusts are extremely corrosive to the skin and rapidly cause severe chemical burns or large open, boil-like sores. Moisture and perspiration will accelerate tissue destruction. Inhaled
Breathing high concentrations of dust may lead to acute poisoning, nausea, difficult breathing. Severe exposures may lead to respiratory failure and death 2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
This material is not considered to be a carcinogen. Positive mutagenic activity has been reported in experimental animals. Prolonged exposures can lead to mottling of teeth enamel and osteosclerosis.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
Obtain immediate medical attention. DO NOT hesitate to hospitalise.
Eye
Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention.
Skin
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash before re-use. Obtain medical attention.
Inhaled
Remove to fresh air. If NOT breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Obtain medical attention. DO NOT hesitate to hospitalise.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Lime water (saturated Calcium Hydroxide solution) or 1% Calcium Chloride is an antidote for ingested Sodium Fluoride Poisoning.
2.6 Toxicity Data
Oral LD50 = 80 mg/kg (Rat) Oral LDLo = 75 mg/kg (Human) Dermal LDLo = 300 mg/kg (Mouse)
3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
3.1 Exposure Standards
Time Weighted Average (TWA) = 2.5 mg (F)/m3 Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL) = Not established Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) = 2.5 mg (F)/m3 Dangerous exposure = 500 mg (F)/m3
3.2 Engineering Controls
Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposure levels below standards.
3.3 Personal Protection
If use conditions generate dusts, wear an approved respirator appropriate for those emission levels. Wear rubber gloves, chemical goggles and full face shield unless a full facepiece respirator is worn. Wear a long sleeved shirt, trousers, safety shoes and rubber apron. Ensure a safety shower and eyewash are nearby and ready for use.
3.4 Flammability
Material is non-flammable. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
4.1 Storage / Transport
Keep container tightly closed. Store in a secure poison area. DO NOT store in glass. Keep away from strong acids.
4.2 Packaging / Labelling UN No. 1690 Class 61b Sun Risk None Allocated Hazchem Code 2Z Pack Group III EPG No. 6B5 Shipping Name SODIUM FLUORIDE Hazard TOXIC
Risk Phrases R25 Toxic if swallowed. R32 Contact with acids liberates very toxic gas. R36/38 Irritating to eyes and skin.
Safety Phrases S1/2 Keep locked up and out of reach of children. S22 Do not breathe dust. S36 Wear suitable protective clothing. S45 In case of accident or if you feel unwell, contact a doctor or immediately (show the label where possible).
4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Evacuate area. Avoid raising dust.
Disposal
Observe all Local, State and Federal regulations before you: Cautiously dissolve the material in water. Neutralise immediately with sodium carbonate or, if the material does not dissolve completely, add a little hydrochloric acid followed by sodium carbonate. Add calcium chloride in excess of the amount needed to precipitate the fluoride and/or carbonate. Separate the insolubles and bury in a landfill site approved for hazardous-waste disposal.
4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD Fire / Explosion
Will not burn or explode. Product decomposes to TOXIC products at high temperatures (ie Hydrogen fluoride). Incompatible with strong acids. When moist or in solution, Sodium Fluoride is corrosive. Mixing vessels having linings of rubber, Kel-F, Teflon or polyethylene should not be used.
Extinguishing Media
Noncombustible. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding conditions. Dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or foam. 5 OTHER INFORMATION
Other Information
