2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

The main symptoms of the acute phase of KBrO3 poisoning are vomiting, dirrheoa and abdominal pain. Subsequently, headcahe, dizziness, shock symptoms, deafness , unconsciousness and convulsions are possible.

Eye

May be irritating to the eyes.

Skin

May be irritating to the skin.

Inhaled

Irritating to the upper respiratory tract. Difficultly breathing may occur. Absorption from the lungs may cause symptoms similar to those of ingestion.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Symptoms recorded as: rashes resembling acne, mental dullness, slurred speech and poor memory. May cause methaemoglobin.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Seek medical attention, If swallowed, wash mouth out thoroughly with plenty of water and give water or milk to drink. Get medical attention immediately.

Eye

Seek medical assistance. Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 20 minutes occasionally lifting upper and lower eyelids.

Skin

Immediately remove any contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with mild soap and plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Wash clothing before re-use. Get medical attention immediately.

Inhaled

In case of dust inhalation or breathing fumes released from heated material, remove person to fresh air. Keep the person quiet and warm. Apply artificial respiration if necessary and get medical attention immediately.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safet shower is readily available.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

KBrO3 is a nephrotoxin and an ototoxin. Cardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity have also been reported.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 321 mg/kg (rat) Carcinogenicity - IARC Group 2B (animal sufficient evidence, human limited evidence). Potassium bromate induced kidney tumours in rats following administration of relatively high concentrations (250 or 500 ppm) in drinking water. In other laboratory animal species (mice and hamsters) the same significant typical carcinogenic activity could not be demonstrated.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

Recommended exposure limit = 5 mg/m3

3.2 Engineering Controls

Avoid generating and inhaling dusts. Maintain concentration below recommended exspoure limit.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory protection - if dust is likely to pose a problem, an effective dust mask should also be worn. Eye protection - wear appropriate eye protection such as safety goggles. Skin protection - wear PVC gloves. Wear overalls or apron.

3.4 Flammability

Product will not ignite but is a strong oxidising agent and may form explosive mixtures with ammonium compounds, combustible materials, reducing agents or finely powdered materials such as metals, sulphur or carbon.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Stable on storage but best stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry well ventilated area away from organic materials. Not to be loaded into the same vehicle or freight containers as : Explosives, flammable gas, poisonous gas, flammable liquids, flammable solids, spontaneously combustible substances, dangerous when wet substances, organic peroxides, poisons capable of igniton and burning, radioactive substances, corrosives, class 9 material capable of ignition and burning. Avoid contact with incompatible materials.

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. 1484

Class 5.1

Sub Risk None Allocated

Hazchem Code 1YE

Pack Group II

EPG No. 31

Shipping Name POTASSIUM BROMATE

Hazard TOXIC OXIDIZING

Risk Phrases

R9 Explosive when mixed with combustible material.

R25 Toxic if swallowed.

R45 May cause cancer.

Safety Phrases

S45 In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label whenever possible).

S53 Avoid exposure - obtain special instructions before use.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Keep combustibles away from spilled material. Clean up personnel should wear full protective gear.

With a clean shovel; place material into clean, dry container and cover. Move containers form spill area and keep for waste disposal. After material pickup is complete, flush remainder with sodium bisulphite solution following by large amounts of water. Ventilate area.

Disposal

Add material to a large amount of water. Slowly add sodium bisulphite. Acidify if reaction does not proceed spontaneously. Bromine will be liberated during the reaction, which is complete when no bromine remains. Neutralise and dispose of by flushing down the drain with large quantities of water. Observe all federal, state and local environmental regulations when disposing of this material.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Strong oxidising agent. Non-combustible but when involved in a fire it liberates oxygen which increases the rate of burning of the combustible materials involved and can cause explosion. Intimate mixture with powdered materials such as metal powders, sulphur or carbon may ignite spontaneously or when subjected to friction and burn with explosive violence. Containers may explode when involved in a fire. Will decompose from 370 deg C releasing poisonous and corrosive fumes of bromine.

Extinguishing Media

Use extinguishing media appropriate and suitable to surrounding conditions.
