2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhoea. Symptoms of the ingestion of large amounts may be delayed for several hours and may include epigastric pain, haematemesis and possible circulatory failure. Hours or days after apparent recovery metabolic acidosis, convulsions and coma may occur. If the patient survives, symptoms of acute liver necrosis may develop and could lead to death due to heptic coma.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic symptoms by ingestion are constipation which has been reported in the continued administration of medicinal amounts of iron salts.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Where the amount exceeds 300 mg seek immediate medical aid. Poison Information Centres in each State capital city can provide additional assistance.

Eye

Irrigate with cold running water. If soreness or irritation persists seek medical aid.

Skin

Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area with running water. Seek medical aid if irritation persists.

Inhaled

Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming casualty. Seek medical attention if discomfort persists.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient. Primary routes of entry are by ingestion, inhalation, skin contact and eye contact. Symptoms may be delayed for hours or days.
