2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion of large amounts may cause gastrointestinal irritation. Expected to be a low ingestion hazard.

Eye

May cause mild irritation.

Skin

May cause milk skin irritation. Low hazard for usual industrial handling.

Inhaled

Low hazard for usual industrial handling. Excessive inhalation may cause minor respiratory irritation.

Immediately irrigate the eye with copious quantities of water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

Long term tests = In the following tests no adverse effects were detected: Chronic toxicity, oral, Carcinogenic effect, reproduction toxicity. In tests for chronic inhalative toxicity no irreversible changes and no signs of silicosis were discovered. Experiences with humans - Work related silicosis or other product specific illnesses of the respiratory canals were not observed.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Local exhaust ventilation should not be required. Use in a well ventilated area. Ensure that the OES (Occupational Exposure Standard) for ammonia is not exceeded.

3.3 Personal Protection

Eye protection - wear safety glasses or gogles. Respiratory protection - a dust mask should be worn. Skin protection - wear overalls and chemicl and chemical resistant gloves should be worn.

The product is not classified as flammable or combustible.


SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION


4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place away form direct heat or sunlight. Use the usual high standards of industrial hygiene. Avoid contact with imcompatible materials such as acids, alkalis and nitrites. Shelf life or product is nominally 6 months. The product does not deteriorate either chemically or biologically after this period.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective gear such as overalls and chemical resistant gloves.

Small spillages - rinse away with plenty of water. Large spillages - collect up for authorised disposal.

Disposal

Small quantities - wash to the trade effluent, ensuring local water consents are maintained. Large quantities - the material should be sent to a specialised waste contractor for disposal. It is not classified as special (hazardous) waste.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Product is not classified as flammable or combustible. A limited range of ammonia/air (16-27% ammonia) mixtures can be ignited with difficulty and explosion may occur. Product may decopose above 50 deg C. Hazardous decomposition products include ammonia gas and carbon dioxide.

Extinguishing Media

Use water/water spray, carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder, alcohol or polymer foam to extinguish. Fire fighters should wear full protective gear including self-contained breathing apparatus.

Other Information

Environmental fate and distribution - ammonium bicarbonate is very soluble in water. It has a low potential for bioaccumulation. Presistence and degradation - ammonium ion is biodegradable. The nitrogen cycle descibes how ammonia is converted to nitrate which may be assimilated into plant life. Toxicity - it is likely to have a toxic affect on fish if allowed to enter watercourses.
